A Christian University Bans Hiring LGBTQ Staff

The oldest woman to ever give birth was 74 years old. According to news outlets, Mangayamma Yaramati of India received an in vitro fertilization and gave birth through a Caesarean section to twin girls in 2019. However, her age was never independently verified; neither was the age of a woman who was supposedly 70 years old when she gave birth. The oldest verified mother was 66, while the oldest woman to conceive naturally was 59 years old.

This week, we’ve recapped three stories for you. Gunshots killed a woman at a high school graduation, students at a Christian college protested against the school’s ban on LGBTQ+ staff, and a maintenance worker fell through a skylight and died at Fairfield University.

Gunfire Kills 1, Injures 2 at High School Graduation:

The seniors of Morris Jeff Community School were on the campus of Xavier University of Louisiana to celebrate graduating high school. Suddenly, the day turned somber when gunshots were fired and three people were hit. One elderly woman died from her wounds, while two men were brought to the hospital.

“There was a fight that broke out between apparently two females,” said Christopher Goodly, the New Orleans Police Department Chief Deputy Superintendent. “Subsequent to this fight, subjects produced weapons, and shots were shot.”

According to CNN, “multiple people were detained at the scene for questioning, police said. A suspect and motive are still under investigation. No arrests have been made.”

Students Protest Against Injustice Toward LGBTQ’s:

Last week, Seattle Pacific Unviersity (SPU) voted to uphold its ban on hiring LGBTQ+ staff. In response, a number of students protested by walking out of class yesterday.

The trustees said their decision was made because it was most in line with university ideals. Cedric Davis, the Board of Trustees Chair, gave a statement.

“We want the community of SPU to know that this was a thorough and prayerful deliberation,” he said. "While this decision brings complex and heart-felt reactions, the Board made a decision that it believed was most in line with the university's mission and Statement of Faith and chose to have SPU remain in communion with its founding denomination, the Free Methodist Church USA, as a core part of its historical identity as a Christian university."

The response from students was a strong one. Laur Lugos, SPU's student body president, told NPR affiliate KUOW: "This is not a new fight — this has been an ongoing fight for 30 years."

Maintenance Worker at Fairfield University Dies:

A 57-year-old man working at Fairfield University fell through a skylight on Tuesday morning and was later pronounced dead. The identity of the man has not yet been released.

Emergency responders found the man lying on a concrete floor around 7:00 a.m. He was in a semi-responsive state and was brought to the hospital, where he later died.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has opened a routine investigation to determine if there were any violations of workplace safety standards.

It’s championship season in NCAA athletics. Over the past week, a number of teams have been crowned the best in the country in their respective sports. Below are the highlights.

• Maryland Men’s Lacrosse beat Cornell 9-7 to win the national championship and complete a perfect season. They finished 18-0, becoming the thirteenth team to go undefeated through an entire season.

• The UNC Women’s Lacrosse team also finished the year undefeated (22-0), winning the title game 12-11 against reigning champions Boston College.

• Virginia won the Men’s Tennis Championship, sweeping Kentucky 4-0, while Ben Shelton of Florida University won the single’s national championship.

• The University of Texas won the Women’s National Championship for the second straight year, defeating Oklahoma 4-1. Texas’ Peyton Stearns also won the individual title.

• Vanderbilt freshman Gordon Sargent won the Men’s Individual Golf Championship. Team play is still going on.

• Stanford University won its second ever NCAA Golf Championship, defeating Oregon 3-2. Rose Zhang of Stanford also won the individual championship, leading wire to wire.
