Chinese Students Shout Obscenities at a Student for Presenting on Taiwan

The oldest land animal on the planet was around for Andrew Jackson’s presidency. He’s lived through the Civil War and the both World Wars. He’s traveled thousands of miles and has been in retirement for over a hundred years. His name is Jonathan, and he’s a tortoise.

The 440-pound chelonian lives on the tiny, volcanic island of St. Helena. The island is a British territory located a thousand miles off the west coast of Africa and is famous for being the place to which Napoleon was exiled—an event that occurred only a few years before Jonathan’s birth.

Jonathan once lived in the Seychelles Islands, but at around age 50 he was captured and given to the governor of St. Helena as a present (in 1882). Since then, Jonathan has spent most of his time lounging around the estate. Several other tortoises have come and gone during his time, but Jonathan remains a constant.

Joe Hollins, Jonathan’s caretaker, says Jonathan comes to him like a dog when he calls his name. Jonathan is now blind and has lost his sense of smell, but he still has a healthy appetite and shows no sign of giving up.

According to The Washington Post, “The previous known longevity record was held by a radiated tortoise named Tu’i Malila, reportedly given to Tonga’s royal family in 1777. When Tu’i Malila died in 1965, she was about 188 years old, according to Guinness World Records.”

Despite these incredible feats of longevity, these tortoises have nothing on the Greenland shark. It is believed this species of shark, which lives near the arctic, can live up to 500 years. Currently, the record for the oldest animal is a 507-year-old clam named Ming, which died in 2006.

Chinese students at the University of Southampton in the UK booed a fellow student’s presentation on Taiwan and attempted to block the screen. Video of the incident surfaced and showed a student using their hand to cast a shadow over the Taiwanese flag and yelling, “Go to the next one,” referring to the next slide. Another student can be heard shouting, “F**K you!” at the presenter.

The student presenting was Japanese, and part of their presentation stated “Taiwan is a country” and showed the Taiwanese flag.

Later, a Chinese student with the handle Gong Zheng Ah Gong Zheng posted the video on Weibo and boasted of his actions. “China’s sovereignty will never be violated!” he reportedly wrote on the caption of his post, according to Yahoo! News. “I will be proud of it for the rest of my life.”

The University of Southampton has not commented on the incident.

This spring, Jim Nantz, 63, will call his 32nd and final March Madness. The face of CBS broadcasting, Nantz wants to spend more time with his wife and three children.

Nantz has commentated on the Masters, Super Bowl, and NCAA basketball finals. He’s had a slew of memorable calls, with one of the most iconic coming when Kris Jenkins hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to win the National Championship for Villanova.

Fortunately for the many millions of viewers, Nantz will not retire entirely from broadcasting, only from his duties for college basketball. CBS has already announced that Ian Eagle will take his place.
