There are nine different animals that have passed the “mirror self-recognition test.” Developed by John Gallup Jr. in 1970, the test involves putting a mark on an animal and placing the animal in front of a mirror to see how it responds to the change.

Using this process, researchers have determined nine animals can recognize themselves, including elephants, apes, dolphins, and even ants.

Is college worth it?

Each year, the debate grows on whether or not spending thousands of dollars on a college degree is worth the return. If one does make the decision to attend, then he or she must decide which institution offers the best bang for their buck.

According to Yahoo, “The ranking assessed schools on a variety of factors, including tuition and costs, average student debt, graduation rates, and net earnings after enrollment. Institutions were ranked based on return on investment at the 10-year, 15-year, 20-year, 30-year, and 40-year periods.”

The research found that 25 of the top 30 institutions with the best short term returns granted associate degrees or certificates. This is because students generally leave with less debt and enter the workforce sooner. However, over time the long term gains from these schools are not nearly as high.

There were some surprises on the list, including Harvard, which ranked 133rd for 10-year net present value and 45th for 40-year net present value. In fact, most Ivy League Schools ranked outside the top thirty.

Dominating the top of the list are health and technology schools, with University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis coming in at number one. Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, MCPHS University, California Institute of Technology, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology round out the top five.

However, this list does not differentiate ROI for students based on degrees, which is perhaps the most telling metric. For example, a STEM at Harvard is likely to result in higher career earnings than a Literary Arts degree at the same school.

Sports Update:

The wait for a new home run leader goes on. Oklahoma University’s Jocelyn Alo remains on 95 career blasts, tied for the most all-time.

Many thought the record would go this past weekend, and though Alo went to the plate 19 times over five games, she was walked ten times and hit by a pitch on another occasion. Her ability to get on base helped inspire Oklahoma to victories in all five games, improving their record to 15-0 this season.

Lauren Chamberlain, a former Oklahoma Sooner herself, set the record back in 2015 with 95 blasts.

Though Alo did not get her 96th this weekend, she will have plenty more chances; the Sooners have 35 regular season games remaining. It is only a matter of when, not if, Alo takes the title for herself, and more likely than not, she will shatter it.
